This is a certificate issued by the Western Maryland Railway Company from the 1950s. It is green or blue in color, includes cancellation holes, and is hand-signed. The Western Maryland Railway Company was incorporated in Maryland and operated as a key regional freight and passenger carrier across the Mid-Atlantic region. Established in the 1850s and expanded significantly in the early 20th century, the company served as an important link between Baltimore, Hagerstown, and western Pennsylvania, with connections to West Virginia and the coal-producing regions of Appalachia.
Throughout the mid-1900s, including the period when this certificate was issued, the Western Maryland Railway specialized in moving coal, steel, and other bulk materials. The company maintained a reputation for efficiency and well-maintained infrastructure. Its scenic routes through mountain regions also supported limited passenger service.
In 1973, the Western Maryland Railway was fully absorbed into the Chessie System—alongside the Baltimore and Ohio and Chesapeake and Ohio railroads—and later became part of CSX Transportation. The Western Maryland name ceased independent operations, but its rail lines remain active today under successor companies.
