Are the certificates authentic?

Yes, all of the certificates we sell are authentic stock and bond certificates unless otherwise mentioned in the description. At one point in time, this certificate represented a share of of the company, or a bond receipt. These certificates have been removed from circulation and digitalized, as seen by cancellation holes, stamps and writing on the certificate. We offer these certificates as a collectable item, not a security.

This is an original commemorative certificate from the City of New York celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Brooklyn Bridge, dated 1983 and printed in navy blue. Features a dual vignette showcasing the Manhattan skyline with the Brooklyn Bridge and World Trade Center towers in the foreground, and below it a historical engraving of the early bridge with steamboats on the East River. The design includes Victorian borders with floral and geometric patterns.

Shows minor edge wear consistent with age. This certificate was issued to "A Very Special Friend" and includes an embossed seal with star pattern in the lower center. It has been folded but will be shipped flat. Offered as a collectible.

In 1883, New York City achieved what many thought impossible when the Brooklyn Bridge opened across the East River. Designed by John Augustus Roebling, the project fell to his son Washington Roebling after the elder Roebling died from tetanus following a ferry accident while surveying the bridge site. When Washington suffered decompression sickness from working in the underwater caissons, his wife Emily Warren Roebling became the first woman field engineer, effectively supervising the bridge's completion. At 1,595 feet, it was the world's longest suspension bridge and the first to use steel wire cables instead of iron.

The bridge transformed Brooklyn from a separate city into an extension of Manhattan, spurring massive real estate development in Brooklyn Heights and DUMBO. The project cost $15 million and took 14 years to complete, claiming at least 20 lives during construction. P.T. Barnum led 21 elephants across the bridge in 1884 to demonstrate its stability after public fears of collapse. By 1983, when this centennial was celebrated, the bridge had become an icon of American engineering prowess and the enduring symbol of New York City itself.

Brooklyn Bridge commemoratives from the 1983 centennial celebration remain popular with both New York memorabilia collectors and engineering history enthusiasts, particularly pieces that capture both the bridge's Victorian engineering triumph and its place in the modern skyline.

Materials and care

Here are some quick tips to preserve your certificate for decades to come.

Paper quality: Stock certificates were printed on a variety of certificate paper dating back to the mid 1800s. Most of these vintage collectable certificates have signs of used & wear , cancellation holes, pencil / pen writing, stamps, staples, adhesives, slight rips, missing coupons and other features.

Handling: Always handle the certificate with clean, dry hands or use cotton gloves to avoid transferring oils and dirt from your skin onto the paper.

Storage: Store the certificate in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can cause fading. Use acid-free folders or archival-quality plastic sleeves to protect it from moisture, dust, and physical damage.

Framing: If displaying the certificate, use a frame with UV-protective glass to prevent light damage. Ensure the certificate is mounted using acid-free materials to avoid any chemical reactions that could degrade the paper over time.

Avoid Exposure: Keep the certificate away from direct sun, extreme temperatures and humidity, which can cause the paper to warp or deteriorate. Avoid exposing it to pollutants, such as smoke or chemicals, which can cause discoloration.
