This blue stock certificate from CNA Financial Corporation, issued in 1975, features cancellation holes, stamps, and handwritten annotations, indicating its authenticity and historical use.

CNA Financial Corporation, based in Chicago, Illinois, was incorporated in 1967. Its principal subsidiary, Continental Casualty Company (CCC), was founded in 1897 in Detroit, initially providing accident and health insurance to railroad industry employees. The company merged with the Metropolitan Accident Company, changed its name to the Continental Casualty Company, and moved to Chicago. Over the years, CNA expanded through acquisitions, including the National Fire Insurance Company of Hartford in 1956 and the American Casualty Company in 1963. The name CNA is derived from the first letters of these original companies, initially forming the acronym Continental National American Group, now simply known as CNA.

As of 2018, CNA is the seventh largest commercial insurer in the United States, providing property and casualty insurance products and services for businesses and professionals in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Asia. CNA is 90% owned by Loews Corporation, a holding company with interests in offshore oil and gas drilling rigs, natural gas transmission pipelines, oil and gas exploration, hotel operations, and package manufacturing.
