Are the certificates authentic?
Are the certificates authentic?
Yes, all of the certificates we sell are authentic stock and bond certificates unless otherwise mentioned in the description. At one point in time, this certificate represented a share of of the company, or a bond receipt. These certificates have been removed from circulation and digitalized, as seen by cancellation holes, stamps and writing on the certificate. We offer these certificates as a collectable item, not a security.
This is an original 1930s stock certificate from the Houston Oil Company of Texas, available in blue, red, or a both color styles.
Each certificate is officially issued and bears standard cancellation marks, signifying its retired status. The top of the certificate features a classic vignette of an active oil field—derricks, pipelines, and industrial detail—capturing the essence of Texas's early energy boom. Buyers will receive a certificate similar in style and condition to the one shown.
The Houston Oil Company of Texas was incorporated in 1901, just months before the legendary Spindletop gusher near Beaumont, Texas, ignited the modern petroleum era. Although not the direct discoverer of Spindletop, Houston Oil quickly gained control of vast tracts of mineral-rich land in East Texas and the Gulf Coast. It was a landholding powerhouse, often leasing its acreage to drilling operators, including Gulf Oil and Humble Oil (later Exxon).
Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, Houston Oil leveraged the skyrocketing demand for oil and refined products, playing a pivotal role in feeding the American industrial engine. Its extensive land and mineral rights portfolio made it a key player in licensing and royalty arrangements, rather than direct extraction.
