This is an original bond from New York City's Columbus and Ninth Avenue Railroad Company, dated 1893. This First Mortgage Gold Bond for $5,000 is printed in brown and features an ornate decorative header with elaborate Victorian typography, complemented by decorative corner elements with floral and scroll motifs throughout. Comes with a sheet of coupons affixed, each with a unique serial number printed by the American Bank Note Company.
You will receive a similar certificate to the one shown. As with all antique documents, time has given this certificate its own character. A genuinely one-of-a-kind artifact from 1893. The bond shows appropriate aging and toning for its 130-year history, and includes a single punch hole through the center indicating it was properly redeemed and retired from circulation.
In 1893, New York City's West Side was still being built block by block, and street railways were the connective tissue. The Columbus and Ninth Avenue Railroad operated horse-drawn and cable car service along two of the most heavily trafficked north-south corridors on the upper West Side: Columbus Avenue and Ninth Avenue, serving a neighborhood in the midst of explosive residential and commercial growth following the opening of Central Park and the elevated lines that had transformed upper Manhattan a decade earlier.
N.J. Rockwell, who signed this bond as president, was a central figure in New York's street railway consolidation movement of the 1890s, a period when dozens of competing local lines were being quietly absorbed into larger operating combines. The Columbus and Ninth Avenue Railroad was itself a product of this consolidation wave — and ultimately a casualty of it. The company was folded into the Metropolitan Street Railway system, the great Gilded Age monopoly that briefly controlled nearly all surface transit in Manhattan before its spectacular financial collapse in 1907.
Railroad and transit bonds from the 1890s represent a pivotal moment when American cities were literally laying the tracks for modern urban life. Avoid Exposure: Keep the certificate away from direct sun, extreme temperatures and humidity, which can cause the paper to warp or deteriorate. Avoid exposing it to pollutants, such as smoke or chemicals, which can cause discoloration.
